Film Europe is opening a unique cultural space in the historic centre of Bratislava – Edison Filmhub. It is a boutique cinema with a café, bistro, and gallery, offering a new way to spend time enjoying film, art, and exquisite food.
This long-awaited project has been in the works since 2019 under the leadership of Ivan Hronec, Silvia Hroncová, Dominik Hronec, and Veronika Hroncová Žilinková. Edison Filmhub is located in the historic center of Bratislava's Old Town at Baštová 6 – one of the narrowest and oldest streets in the city with a mysterious atmosphere under Michalská brána. The alley, which was once part of the city fortifications, brings to mind the city executioner and Jewish ritual baths. Perhaps Thomas Alva Edison himself even walked through this street during his visit to Bratislava on September 12, 1911. Today, this space is writing a new chapter in the street's history – this time with film, culture, and unique events.
The concept and name are based on the successful Edison Filmhub in Prague at Jeruzalémská 2, which has been a staple on the city's film map since 2019. The architecture of Bratislava's Edison was taken on by the JRKVC studio, several times awarded the CE ZA AR Prize, with architects Peter Jurkovič and Kristína Tomanová, who have been collaborating on the project since 2020. As it is a residential building, the project presented several challenges, from acoustic insulation to optimal space layout. Great emphasis was placed on ensuring that every film experience had top-quality image, sound, and comfort, while at the same time ensuring that the residents of the building did not feel any discomfort from the presence of the cinema and café. The result is a unique space where guests can spend the whole day in peace – from morning coffee with delicious homemade food, to films and cultural experiences.
CINEMA
Edison Filmhub will offer two boutique cinema halls – a large one with a capacity of 50 seats and a small one with a capacity of 20 seats. All cinema seats have a pull-out table for glasses or a notepad. The first public screening in both the large and small auditoriums will be a preview screening on January 20, 2026, of the latest Danish black comedy starring Mads Mikkelsen, The Last Viking, from director Anders Thomas Jensen, who also directed Adam's Apples. The film will also be the headliner of the 12th annual SCANDI film festival. Festivals such as SCANDI, Be2Can, Crème de la Crème, and others will be a regular part of the programme. Each cinema hall will have screenings three to four times a day, including discounted screenings for seniors and students. Bratislava is a multicultural city whose residents include foreign citizens who do not speak Slovak. Therefore, most of the films in the daily programme will be screened in their original language with Czech and English subtitles.
On weekends, there will be additional screenings of films for children. There will also be regular film cycles, which will be accompanied by post-film discussions with experts from various professional backgrounds. One of the first regular events will be a cycle called Prítomie sprevádza (The Arrival Accompanies), which will be led by presenter Zuzana Šifra Matuščáková and psychologist Lenka Pavuková Rušarová.
CAFÉ
The café has been open since December 4, 2025, and offers a selection of coffee, wine, and a wide range of beverages. The coffee is supplied by the Banská Bystrica roastery Mlsnacava, which has a long-term partnership with Prague's Edison Filmhub. A modular Modbar espresso system is used to prepare the coffee - this is a unique type of technology to Bratislava. It represents the pinnacle of minimalist design and precise control, allowing baristas to regulate the pressure, temperature, and water flow for each coffee separately. The Modbar is installed under the counter instead of a classic large coffee machine.
The menu also includes draft beer from the Czech craft brewery Zichovec in Louny. The way the individual drinks are served is also interesting. Coffee is served in ceramic cups by artist Marta Javorská from Javorsky Atelier. All other beverages, including lemonades, beer, and batch brew, are served in glass cups made in the oldest functioning glassworks in Slovakia – R-GLASS in Katarínska Huta in the village of Cinobaňa. Some of the glasses are even handmade, including the legendary Zlatá Zuzana for special beers.
BISTRO
As part of its high-quality film and coffee culture, Edison will also offer gastronomy in the form of a bistro, which will be fully operational in the first quarter of 2026. The menu will feature light homemade dishes with a modern twist, made from local ingredients. The menu will change according to the season with the ambition of becoming a natural part of the all-day experience at Edison. The menu will also include themed dishes for film screenings, such as SCANDI, Be2Can, and Crème de la Crème.
GALLERY
Edison Filmhub will most likely be the only cinema in the world to feature a glass gallery. The gallery is located in underground spaces that were part of the city walls until the early 19th century. The brick rooms with vaulted ceilings will not only be a time machine into Bratislava's history, but also a backdrop for glass exhibitions by glass design students and established glass designers. The curator of the regular exhibitions will be the internationally renowned designer Patrik Illo, who is also the head of the Glass Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. The collaboration with Patrik Illo will build on a long-standing partnership within the "Story of Glass" exhibition cycle at the Old School in Kokava nad Rimavicou, which is operated and organised by Film Europe. The gallery's ambition is to present contemporary glass design. The first exhibition features works by students and teachers from European art colleges who participated in two editions of the international glass symposia at the Old School in Kokava. Present are works of artists from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Ukraine. The gallery will be open daily on request from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
SPACE FOR EVENTS AND MEETINGS
Edison Filmhub is a place for cultural encounters and experiences. The premises will also be available for private events, conferences, lectures, and corporate events. The film selection will also include school screenings that can enrich learning. Tailor-made screenings will be provided for specific subjects from a wide range of festivals, European and world cinema milestones from the portfolio of the distribution company Film Europe, as well as other distribution companies. The regular programme will include festivals and film screenings, Slovak films, quality mainstream films, previews, and, above all, interviews with filmmakers.
“Edison Filmhub was created as a space where film, coffee, gastronomy, glass art, architecture, design, community, and education come together - culture and experience under one roof. We believe that Edison Filmhub will become a natural part of the city's cultural life and a place you will enjoy returning to regularly. Thanks to our neighbors, such as Hotel Beigli, the City Library, the Tomas Umrian Gallery, the Austrian Cultural Forum, and The Bridge language school, Baštová Street is already a cultural and educational stronghold in the city. Edison Filmhub is not only our company project, but above all a family project in which we have invested a significant part of our personal resources, energy, and, above all, our love for culture, art, and education, which we have been cultivating for years. Six years of construction work are coming to an end, and we are starting a new chapter. Welcome to Edison on Baštová!”
