Dutch freighter captain Jakob Störr and his friend bet that Jakob will marry the first woman who enters a café. This is how he meets whimsical French woman Lizzy, whom he later marries. A love story begins to unfold and from that moment on, a series of trials enter the life of the loving, painfully honest Störr. Through his character we understand the complexity, mystery, fragile beauty and elusive, uncontrollable nature of life. Director Ildikó Enyedi, winner of the Berlinale Golden Bear Award and an Oscar nomination for Of Body and Soul, bases this film on the novel of the same name by Milan Füst. The novel was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
